The action takes place at the beginning of the 17th century amid a civil strife among the Kazakh sultans and biys (judges). During the absence of a single ruler and universal vulnerability, Kazakh lands are attacked by various foreign tribes. People start to looked up to the Batyrs who inspire the common people with their bravery and wisdom. The picture focuses on the importance of keeping a nation united and how  internal discord can destroy a state .
